Employment law changes taking effect on 1 October

Posted Sep 30, 2014

There are various employment law changes that will take effect on 1 October 2014, including:

  • the annual increase in national minimum wage (NMW). The National Minimum Wage (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2014 SI 2014/2485 enact the biggest cash increase in take home pay for low paid workers since 2008, as the rate for workers aged 21 and over increases from £6.31 to £6.50. The new rate for 18 to 20 year olds is £5.13, the new rate for those under 18 is £3.79 and the new rate for apprentices is £2.73
  • the introduction of the right for qualifying employees to take time off to accompany a pregnant woman to antenatal appointments. S.127 of the Children and Families Act 2014 amends the Employment Rights Act 1996 to introduce a new right for employees (and qualifying agency workers) to take unpaid time off work to attend up to two ante-natal appointments with a pregnant woman with whom they have a 'qualifying relationship'. The right is available to a pregnant woman's husband, civil partner or partner (including same-sex partners), the father or parent of the pregnant woman's child, and intended parents in a surrogacy situation who meet specified conditions.
