Ready to start your legal career in Cumbria?

Sophie Ingledow found her way into law through curiosity, opportunity and the right support – and is now qualified and part of Bendles Solicitors’ family law team.

Careers in law rarely follow a neat, pre‑planned route. For many people, they are shaped by curiosity, opportunity and a series of small decisions that point in the right direction. That was certainly the case for Sophie Ingledow, one of Bendles Solicitors’ newest qualified solicitors.

Sophie didn’t set out with a long‑held ambition to become a lawyer. After completing her GCSEs at Richard Rose Central Academy in Carlisle, she chose law at A-level simply because it interested her. Achieving an A* changed her perception of what might be possible and made her realise she could take it further.

Studying law at university was less about a fixed career destination and more about developing valuable skills, such as learning how to analyse complex information, understand individual situations and apply the law in a practical way.
“I didn’t study law with the ambition of becoming a solicitor,” she says. “It was an interesting course that taught me skills like advocacy and how to analyse information and apply it to real situations.”

Three years later, Sophie graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a first‑class degree and went on to complete a masters in law, including the LPC qualification, keeping her options open.

Like many students at the time, Sophie’s studies were shaped by Covid. Opportunities for work experience were limited and the traditional university experience was curtailed. On returning to Carlisle, she was keen to put her degree to use and join a firm where she could learn, develop and build a long‑term career. She joined Bendles Solicitors as a legal administrator in August 2023 and began her training contract to become a solicitor in September 2024.

Sophie has recently qualified as a solicitor and is now a member of Bendles’ family law team, one of the largest and most experienced in the county.

“I’m really enjoying it,” she says. “It’s challenging and I’m learning something new every day. You’re supporting clients through some of the most difficult times in their lives, and it’s rewarding helping them achieve the best outcome possible.”

At Bendles, investing in people is at the heart of the business. From structured training and mentoring to a supportive team environment, the firm is committed to helping people develop their skills, confidence and careers at every stage.
